When to Change to an Adult Dentist

While Pediatric Dentistry is designed specifically for the care of children, we continue to see many teenagers until they leave for college.

When you decide to make the switch from Pediatric to General Dentistry for your teen really depends on what he or she is comfortable with. Some teenagers may feel uncomfortable and overgrown in a Pediatric office – while some would prefer to stay where they are because they know the office.

We see many teenagers in high school and college who have younger siblings. Sometimes it’s easier for parents to keep them all at one office.

However, keep in mind that we are only able to do so much on adult teeth because we are so closely focused on Pediatric Dentistry. We can complete regular cleanings and exams, take x-rays, do sealants, small fillings, and temporary “silver” crowns – but we cannot do root canals, extractions, or extensive restorations on adult teeth.

Some insurances will only cover treatment at a Pediatric office until a certain age. Check with your insurance company to make sure there are no age limits.
