Orthodontics: Early Intervention
Orthodontics (the branch of dentistry dealing with the positioning and occlusion of teeth) is a rapidly advancing field. Just within the last decade, several improvements have been made.
One of the major advancements is the transformation from a treatment only field to one that uses intervention when possible.
Children are being referred to Orthodontists earlier and younger now, with the hopes that some measures can be taken before all of the permanent teeth have moved into malocclusion (incorrect bite).
Sometimes habit appliance, spacers, extractions of primary teeth, and retainers early on can help make braces an easier and less lengthy process later.
At our office, we generally begin considering a referral to an Orthodontist between 7 and 9 years of age.
It is important to remember that Orthodontic treatment is only good for a child when he or she is mature enough to follow instructions and use proper hygiene. Children that have very poor hygiene, gingivitis (swollen, irritated gums), or a poor diet consisting of too much soda and candy may not be good candidates for Orthodontic treatment.
If you have questions about Orthodontics, ask your child’s pediatric dentist at his or her next visit, or e-mail us.
